Main characters

George Stobbart

Anna-Maria Presa

Anna-Maria is the second main character; although she isn't a playable character, she can be selected from the inventory to interact with items and people.

She asks George to help her decipher a manuscript which has been in her family for many generations, and which points to the location of a treasure. After they find the treasure, Anna-Maria and George spend the night together and, when George wakes up, he finds she is missing.

It is later revealed that she used to work for the Vatican and that some manuscripts were stolen from the library prior to her disappearance.

Later, Anna-Maria helps George stop the bad guys from using the Ark of the Covenant as a weapon of mass-destruction. As George bashes the ark with his telescopic golf-club, Anna-Maria holds Mevlut at bay and eventually shoots him, only to take a bullet as well.

Nico Collard

Supporting characters

Virgil

Virgil is an ex-Marine, ex-con, computer hacker and George’s partner at the bail bond agency. He provides George with the hacking tool which is used several times throughout the game, after which he is not heard from for the rest of the game.

Mevlut

Mevlut is an undercover Turkish secret services agent. He is chasing George because of his connections with the Mafia. He, at first, goes under the guise of a waiter at the Pascha Palace. He later helps George escape from jail realising he is the key to finding the ark. He appears once more at the end to try and collect the Ark, but is shot by Anna-Maria who in turn is shot by Mevlut.

Brother Mark

Brother Mark is a priest and Anna-Maria's neighbour. He wears purple rubber gloves and is constantly cleaning. He is also a big fan of fictional movie star Lucy Chu (a reference to Lucy Liu). Despite several hints throughout the game that Mark might be homosexual, he is revealed to be straight in the lead up to the final confrontation under the Vatican. He calls in the Mafia to deal with the secret Order and is shot in the shoulder in the ensuing firefight.

Archie Lonsdale

Archie is a homeless man who lives outside Anna-Maria's apartment. He came from England to write a book about wines. He is easily distracted by beautiful women, such as Nico. He is said to have a secret stash of booze, which turns out the be the Vatican wine-cellar, where Archie saves George and Anna-Maria by knocking out an evil monk with a wine-bottle.

Sister Angelica

Head nun of the Wafer Factory. Very strict and proud of the modern facilities. She is tricked by George during his trip to Rome, but later sides with him and Nico when she sees Cardinal Gianelli sneak into the factory.

Cardinal Gianelli

A member of the Holy Order, who sends the Mafia after Anna Maria to retrieve the manuscripts that were stolen. Up until the end, it appears that Gianelli is the main villain, until it's revealed that he was trying to stop Devlin and Gregor from using the Ark to kill innocents. Gianelli is shot by Gregor, but is able to give George the manuscript in time.

Maynard

The researcher that the Holy Order assigned to make monatomic gold. He has a large facility in the middle of a dessert in Phoenix, Arizona. When the Mafia attacks the location, there is a devastating explosion that sends Maynard over the edge. When he appears, he is wearing a headband and waving an AK 47 recklessly. He also admits to have been eating the gold, convinced that it protects him from harm.

Maynard is somewhat neurotic and short-tempered. He has two main passions: guns and girls. He helps Nico get his safe into his gold making machine, but is forced to operate it inside in order to disengage the safety mechanism. Unable to escape his own machine, Maynard turns to gold and is shattered to pieces.

Secondary characters

Toni Martino

Toni is bright, ambitious, smart and good-looking. He is the first member of the Martino family to hold an academic degree in Business Studies. He is killed as a punishment for failing to obtain the manuscript the first time and for blaming Fingers's men for the failure. George discovers his body hanging from a hook in the conveyor line.

Fingers Martino

Fingers is a member of the Martino crime family and the head of Mama Martino's Salami factory. His gang is hired to retrieve Anna-Maria's manuscript.

Chico Garella

Chico has been a gangster and member of the Martino crime family for fifty years, but he is still a foot soldier. Chico is a heavy smoker and not too bright. His catchphrase being "Yeap! It's a screw-up alright!". Chico has a love for salami, but isn't much of a gangster and mostly acts as comic relief.

Alfonso

The owner of the hotel where Anna-Maria is staying. Speaks with low, gravely voice and a distinct Brooklyn accent. His hotel, though advertised online as a five-star affair, is in fact (to the disappointment of Mr. Minster) an under-managed establishment, lacking working toilets, functional soda- or cigarette-machines and being infested by death watch beetles.

Alfonso himself is a chronic smoker and his receptionist's booth has a layer of smoke covering the ceiling. His sole employee is Juanita the maid. Despite the pathetic conditions of his hotel, Alfonso cares enough for the security of his guests to have actually installed card-locked doors for the staircase leading up to the rooms.

Alfonso says that he intends to trade his antique grandfather clock for a condo in Florida, once he retires. His golden lighter is the only thing he has left with which to remember his father, who, according to him, died in a gas-explosion.

Thelwell Minster

A guest at Alfonso's hotel. He has a fondness for geese.

Juanita

The receptionist at Alfonso's hotel. George rescues her from the cleaning closet.

Vincenzo Spallacci

Spallacci is the godfather of the Martino crime family. He is cooperating with Cardinal Gianelli to stop the Order of St. Michael, while chasing Anna-Maria in New York. In the conclusion, he goes down below Vatican City with two of his men and brother Mark, to save George's life. He gets a gunshot wound, but peculiarly survives.

Suzie Balloon

Reporter in Phoenix Arizona who interviewed Maynard about his white powder.

Returning Characters

Besides George and Nico, a number of characters seen in previous titles make cameo appearances.

Andre Lobineau

Andre is George's rival and a historical researcher. Although he does not appear in the game, he is mentioned several times. Also, George hacks into his historical database at the beginning of the game. Though he had become friendly with George during the last game, he has apparently gone back to detesting him, as evidenced by a page on his database.

Eamon O'mara

Eamon is a BBC news reporter seen in the previous title: Broken Sword 3. Although he is never actually seen in this game, he is mentioned several times. He came to Istanbul to cover a news report on Topkapı Palace.

Duane Henderson

Duane is an overweight, delusional American tourist previously seen in Broken Sword 1 and 2. He claims to work for the C.I.A. and helps George escape from the Black Cat Club.

Note: In a plot-error in the game, George claims he first met Duane in South America (Broken Sword 2), whereas they actually met in Syria (Broken Sword 1).

Order of St. Michael

Father Devlin

Member of the Holy Order, who gives George information on Anna-Maria. It is only later revealed that he and Father Gregor intend to wipe out the non-Christians of the world with the power of the Ark. Devlin appears to survive the events with little personal consequence.

Father Gregor

Operating alongside, yet more pro-actively than, Father Devlin, Gregor was Anna-Maria's employer and hired her to find the missing Cherubs of the Ark. He later shoots Cardinal Gianelli. He is himself sucked into the Ark's power-vortex, when he lunges for the Ark to save it from George's devastation.
